Manage fonts in Ubuntu with Font Manager

by Toor, August 19th, 2009 | 7 Comments

Font Manager is an application that allows you to easily manage fonts. With Font Manager you can preview installed fonts, activate and de-activate installed fonts, search fonts, group fonts into “Collections”, and export “Collections” to an archive.

Installing Font Manager on Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty

  1. Open your terminal, download deb package of Font Manager and execute dpkg command:

    $ wget http://font-manager.googlecode.com/files/font-manager_0.2-1_all.deb
    $ sudo dpkg -i font-manager_0.2-1_all.deb

  2. To run Font Manager, you can click Applications → Graphics → Font Manager.

    Excuse me for starting a flame war (if it leads to one) but this is a rip-off of the font manager interface in KDE — and has been for years now!

    Good to see it finally make it to Ubuntu.

    @ Ken

    Really?

    Sorry, I’ve only used KDE here and there, but what I remember wasn’t really like this interface at all, it was a part of the control center and it was cluttered. And I don’t remember being able to group fonts and activate/de-activate them.
    But like I said, I don’t really use KDE.

    In any case, I’m just trying to bring a simple font-manager with a clean interface to the GNOME desktop. Because I feel like it needs it. ;-)

    Hope that’s cool.

    Thank you for a wonderful and informative review. I didn’t even realize that this little application existed. It would be wonderful if it were adopted into Gnome by default. Gnome desperately needs a font manager to unify the disparate utilities. This application does a good job of that.

    And even though it doesn’t bill itself as a “professional” font manager, I’ve found it to be very helpful. The most recent version of font-matrix (0.6) is an utter mess. After struggling with it for several days, I downloaded and installed this. It’s both more functional and easier to use.
